Steven R. Nickerson: 1957-2013

“He was extremely eccentric to a real conservative person, but he just had a way with people. Just look at some of his pictures,” said a colleague.

One of the highlights of my brief time at the Detroit Free Press was getting to know Steve Nickerson, who was a staff photographer there. He was a truly wonderful guy — spirited as hell — and always made everyone want to do their creative best. After a long period of being out of touch, we re-connected thanks to Facebook.

Steve was every bit the same guy, but by then he had been sucker-punched by an ultimately fatal disease. He beat the shit out of scleroderma for a lot longer than people expected, but it ultimately took his life this week. In his honor, I will observe a moment of complete insanity. He would’ve loved that.
