Five things we learned while producing this issue:

  1. If you try to do a guerrilla-style photoshoot across the street from the MCI-Concord prison, you will get noticed. (And not in a good way).

  2. “Baking would literally not be possible without the ignition of scientific processes.” So says Timothy McIntosh, an MIT grad, current Harvard GSE student, and grand prize winner of the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. (p.10)

  3. “The research says that if children are going to truly become readers, they need a minimum of 30 minutes of just reading. Reluctant readers will often not read to people but will read to a dog. Dogs are nonjudgmental and give unconditional love and appreciation. To have a struggling reader read with a dog, they make significant growth.” (p.17)

  4. Jing Wei is one of our favorite new illustrators.

  5. Dr. Ruth is still alive — and still talking sex. We know this because she visited the Ed. School and did this podcast.
