Five things we learned while producing this issue:

  1. Though it would cost up to $375 billion, guaranteed health benefits would actually cut Massachusetts healthcare spending by 18 percent. (p. 8)

  2. When she’s not busy writing and editing, Radmag associate editor Ivelisse Estrada is a vocalist for the band Lost Lake. (And she’s really good!)

  3. “People underestimate how important the written word is in African American culture. They forget that the entire jurisprudence of the 20th century was about trying to integrate schools. It wasn’t just about being the black face in the classroom; it was about getting the education and using the books and machines and technology in those schools. Many African American families guard documentation fiercely, and my family is one of them.” —Patricia Williams, columnist for The Nation and Columbia University law professor, who was the subject of this issue’s cover story. (p. 24)

  4. We’re kind of obsessed with hanging punctuation.

  5. Gems from the Alumni Notes: “The first documentary feature from Rebecca Carpenter ’86 is called Requiem for a Running Back (2017). Carpenter’s father, Lewis Carpenter, was an NFL running back for 10 years; he played for Vince Lombardi’s championship Green Bay Packers. The film investigates his postmortem chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) diagnosis — he was the 18th NFL player to be diagnosed with the condition — along with his daughter’s attempts to understand the science behind CTE.” (p. 45)
