Five things we learned while producing this issue:

  1. Radcliffe’s Schlesinger Library announced in February its acquisition of the papers of the prominent political activist and pioneering feminist thinker Angela Y. Davis. (p.8)

  2. “New results in human subjects show that a single night without sleep leads to about a 5 percent increase in beta amyloid, a protein that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.” Which doesn’t sound good, amirite? (p.14)

  3. Samantha Power is one of our all-time intellectual crushes.

  4. “When the machinery of the US government is working on behalf of the American people or vulnerable people abroad, or on behalf of our security, or in order to fight the Ebola epidemic, it can make a huge difference.” —Power (p.24)

  5. “Human beings do a lot of very self-defeating things, but there is nothing worse now than the tendency to create this idea around entrenched differences between one religion and another, when in fact religion is something that really does embrace a million variations.” —Marilynne Robinson (p.28)
